Canework was introduced into Europe in the 17th Century by the English and Dutch East India Companies, founded respectively in 1600 and 1602. Chair-makers in London began to use rattan cane in the 1660s. Rattan being cheaper than solid wood, cane seats soon became very fashionable and the demand grew even faster when the Great Fire of 1666 destroyed hundreds of homes. Cane seats first appeared in France in the Regence era . They became highly popular under the reign of Louis XV when chairs were designed to be more comfortable and had a less formal look than Baroque furniture. By the late 19th century, in the wake of the Industrial Revolution and the opening of the Suez Canal that provided a shorter sea route to Asia, wicker was widely used for both indoor and outdoor furniture. Extremely light and durable, rattan cane became the basic material for café chairs.
