Lac du Flambeau, home of Mildred (Tinker) Schuman, poet, beader, pipe-carrier, tribal elder.
This shirt, part of the Deer Toe Dress, is embellished with beadwork, appliqué, quillwork and deer toes. A Medicine wheel is wrapped with porcupine quill. The medicine wheel embodies the Four Directions, represented with the four colors Red, Yellow, White, Black."First I had a dream about deer toes and then I was asked to make baby moccasins by a man who owned deer toes. I traded the moccassins for some deer toes. Then I reached out to a couple who did hides and bought a few to make that Deer Toe Dress. I used to tan deer hides, but I can't do it any more; it's a lot of work and odors. I wear this dress for ceremonies and special events".
