Mark Hewitt
Mark Hewitt Workshop, North Carolina, USA
« I see myself as a purist ». These words spoken by Mark Hewitt clearly define his ideal as he favors the purity of round shapes and earthy tones. He makes pottery that magnifies daily life and looks upon his own success with amusement and humbleness. He first became an apprentice in his native England before completing his training in the USA. In 1983 he set up his own pottery in North Carolina and earned a reputation as he specialized in making functional large-scale pots. His work drew public and museums attention eventually entering the Smithsonian Institution permanent collection. He also co-curated A Potter’s Eye : Art and Tradition in North Carolina Pottery at the North Carolina Museum of Art displaying a selection of his work. This double involvement rings like a mutual acknowledgement between a devoted artist and his land of adoption.
